INCIDENT 68/2025. AUGUST 16th SAT. 09:00hrs FLUTED HOLES, NEWBY MOSS, NORTH YORKSHIRE

Following a report of a sheep down a fluted shaft on Newby Moss, a small team were mobilised. to recover the stricken animal. They accessed the site in CRO 1 and CRO 4.  One team member descended the shaft and was able to capture the sheep and encourage it into the animal haul sack. Both were then carefully brought to the surface and the sheep released, a little hungry but…

ALERT ONLY. AUGUST 3rd SUN. 10.08hrs RIFT POT (MASONGILL), THORNTON IN LONSDALE, NORTH YORKSHIRE. ALERT No 8 OF 2025.

A caver reported that a sheep was stranded about 20m down a shaft into Rift Pot (Masongill). He offered to attempt to rescue it and report back. Meanwhile, team members were put on stand-by and one was tasked with checking the location. When the caver advised that the sheep had been returned safely to the fell, team members were stood down. ALERT ONLY. AUGUST 2nd SAT. 18.41hrs OUTCROP BELOW NEW CLOSE KNOTTS, GORDALE SCAR, MALHAM, NORTH YORKSHIRE. ALERT No 7 OF 2025

A ‘lamb’ was reported to be in distress on one of the limestone scars to the SW of Gordale Scar. The duty controller asked a colleague to assess the site, then alerted team members for attendance the following morning. In the meantime a neighbouring farmer sent up his sheepdog and the well-grown ‘lamb’ self-rescued. Team members were stood down. Volunteer hours:  4    

INCIDENT 48/2005. JUNE 4th WED. 10:59hrs JACKDAW HILL, Nr HORTON IN RIBBLESDALE, NORTH YORKSHIRE

The team were called by North Yorkshire Police to assist a local farmer with a sheep trapped in a small pothole. A small team met the farmer at the location to be confronted with a large sheep that was firmly wedged in a narrow shaft. After two hours of digging away soil and boulders sufficient space was created for the animal to wriggle backwards, then with combined tactics the sheep…
