CRO were called to assist a walker who had reported himself stranded in high winds on Whernside. Further investigation by CRO team leaders and use of a computer based “phone find” tool placed the walker on Great Whernside, near Kettlewell and not on the “3-peaks” Whernside within CRO’s operational area. ALERT Only – Dec. 11th Sat. 20.11 – Sell Gill Holes, Horton in Ribblesdale, North Yorkshire – Alert No. 10 of 2021

Four cavers (all m, early twenties) were reported overdue on a trip into Sell Gill Holes. Team members were put on stand-by while the duty controller made enquiries, but the reporting person soon told him that two of the party were out of the hole, the other two were de-tackling the route out and all were safe. ALERT Only – Aug 23rd Mon. 16.39 – Gordale Scar, Malham, North Yorkshire – Alert No. 8 of 2021

A walker was reported to be having difficulty with his dog, which was described as ‘panicking’, near the top of the lower fall in Gordale Scar. When the duty controller phoned the reporting person, he was told that other walkers had helped the walker and dog up to safety. CRO’s assistance was not needed. Volunteer hours: 0.25  

ALERT Only – Jun 27th Sun. 13.42 – Ledge over Gaping Gill main shaft, Clapham, North Yorkshire – Alert No. 6 of 2021

A CRO member, out leading a school group (his ‘day-job’), saw a sheep apparently stranded on the ledge at the top of the main shaft into the Gaping Gill main chamber. He passed the information on, but thought the sheep might ‘self-rescue’ if left. The following morning, the Duty Controller diverted his morning run to check the site, but the sheep was no longer there. Local farmers were gathering there…
