INCIDENT 4/2024 FEB. 10TH SAT. 2350 HRS. COUNTY POT, LECK FELL, KIRKBY LONSDALE, CUMBRIA, CAVING INCIDENT

The team were called out at 23.50 hrs on Saturday evening by Cumbria Police for an overdue party of nine cavers (7f and 2m – 19 to 22 years) in County Pot, a popular entrance into the Ease Gill system. Two underground teams were deployed to carry out a hasty search of the route that had been given. They were supported by surface personnel who set up a communication relay. Snow drifts made accessing Bull Pot Farm,  the base for exploring the system,  difficult;  the team’s Honda Pioneer was the only vehicle able to pass the drifts in the initial stages. The search teams located the overdue group who were cold and tired. Due to the large number in the group additional support was provided by colleagues from Swaledale MRT and Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue teams. Cumbria highways were also able to respond to the team’s request to clear the snow drifts.

With support and encouragement the overdue party were able to make their way out of the cave and the long walk to Bull Pot Farm where Hot food and drinks were provided.

The party were well equipped and had an effective call out arrangement which ensured the alarm was raised promptly. A long night for everyone involved. As always, thanks to our friends at Red Rose CPC for use of Bull Pot Farm.
