INCIDENT 61/2019 – July 26th. Fri. 13.41hrs – Whernside, Ingleton, North Yorkshire – Mountain Rescue

In warm and humid conditions, a Three Peaks walker (m, 39) became exhausted – unable either to walk or to stand – and experienced occasional cramps on the approach to the summit ridge of Whernside. Despite being given drinks and energy food, his situation did not improve and, after half an hour, his companions rang 999. North Yorkshire Police passed the request for help to CRO.

Although the party was in North Yorkshire, the best approach was from White Shaw Moss, on the Cumbria side of the hill, so a small ‘hasty party’ ran up with water and appropriate snacks. As they began to assist the incapacitated walker, a second CRO team set off, with a stretcher. In the event, the stretcher was not needed and everyone walked gently down to the team vehicles for the return to CRO Base, in Clapham, before the ‘casualty party’ was driven back to Horton in Ribblesdale.
