The team were alerted by North Yorkshire Police to advise that the party of a walker (F, 27yrs) had become cragfast* on steep rocky ground, in blustery winds, on the path leading up to the summit of Pen-y-Ghent on the 3 Peaks Walk. Following contact with the party, a small group of team members were diverted from a local school fete,  where they were on fundraising duties, to assist the party. Other members were despatched from the team depot in case they were needed to assist. Team members quickly found the party and were able to assist them back down the hill to safer ground, and then transported them back to their own vehicle.

  • “cragfast” – a situation where one is stuck on steep, rocky ground unable to move either up or down. Always be aware when scrambling or climbing that it is important to judge your capability and the weather. Don’t be afraid to ‘back off’ if the situation starts to become more difficult than you anticipated, or the weather changes.
