A walker (f, 37) tripped and fell, head first, on the rocky first section of the path from the summit ridge of Whernside towards Bruntscar. YAS sent their rapid response vehicle and an air ambulance, then called CRO. They were joined, later, by a road ambulance. The air ambulance being first on scene, the pilot flew up towards the cloud base and deposited his paramedics about 100m from the casualty. He then flew back down to where CRO members were gathering, collected six team members, a Bell mountain rescue stretcher, a vacuum mattress and rope, taking them up the hill in two flights. The paramedics had by now diagnosed a thoracic spine injury and an elbow injury, so, having been safely ‘packaged’, the casualty was stretchered to the helicopter. As this took off for hospital, the team members walked back down to the RV with the stretcher and spare kit. The other walkers who had stopped to help the casualty were taken back to their vehicles at Ribblehead and Horton by team Land Rover.
