A caller to North Yorkshire Police reported three cavers (all m) several hours overdue from a trip into Gaping Gill, The CRO duty controller was unable to contact members of the caving club which organises the August winch meet, to ask whether they had any knowledge of the mispers, so asked a local member of the team to look for their car in Clapham. While she was doing this, the duty controller phoned the reporting party and was told that the group had just called to say that they had returned to their car and were returning home. It seems that they had not used the GG winch but had become lost underground and, possibly, on the surface.
