INCIDENT 49/2021 – JULY 18th SUN. 15.10 – WHERNSIDE, NORTH YORKSHIRE – MOUNTAIN INCIDENT

A 34 year old female, taking part in a three peaks walk charity event, was reported to be suffering from heat stroke – feeling faint, with cramps and getting worse. The walker was on the ascent of Whernside, not far from Greensett Moss and in the company of event marshals. CRO team members assessed the sick walker and treated her for possible heat stroke / exhaustion. Initially we recorded an improvement in the walkers condition and it was decided to extract her in a stretcher with wheel and then transfer by Landrover to meet with a Yorkshire Ambulance Service crew. During the stretcher carry, the walkers condition began to deteriorate and a request was made by CRO for an air ambulance if one was available. Yorkshire Air Ambulance were able to mobilise an aircraft from Leeds for a rendezvous on the slopes of Whernside and a direct flight to hospital for the walker.
