INCIDENT 93/2022  DEC 10th SAT. 14.52 INGLEBOROUGH ESTATE NATURE TRAIL, CLAPHAM, NORTH YORKSHIRE – MOUNTAIN INCIDENT

Snowfall throughout the night of Friday 9th December was lying several centimetres deep by Saturday morning. That afternoon, a walker slipped and fell on compacted snow on the nature trail between Clapham village and Ingleborough Cave. Her fall caused her to fracture her left ankle, creating significant misalignment of her foot. CRO team members were able to give pain relief to the injured walker, before supporting the injured leg and foot with splintage.  CRO ferried a team doctor and a Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) paramedic to the incident site for further assessment of the walker’s injury and to accompany her while she was transported in a stretcher on board a CRO vehicle. She was driven down to Clapham village for transfer fully in to the care of YAS paramedics. During the incident, CRO team members were made aware that further up the nature trail, 12 adults and 3 young children were still outside Ingleborough Cave after a visit to see Father Christmas. Conditions underfoot had deteriorated markedly and were becoming treacherous following a fall in air temperature with the impending arrival of darkness. The CRO vehicles used for attending to the injured walker were further deployed, with snow chains fitted, to ferry the cave visitors back down to Clapham.
