North Yorkshire Police (NYP) received an incomplete call from someone (or some people?) who had walked off Whernside, was uninjured but lost and benighted, so couldn’t find their car. From some of the words given, he may have been in the Gunnerfleet area. It transpired that the call had ‘roamed’* to another network to enable the 999 call which meant that no-one could call back to ask questions and our reliable PhoneFind application would not work.
As three team members arrived at Ribblehead, in two vehicles, NYP posted that the missing party had called, saying they had found their car and were now on their way home.

* When a mobile phone shows ‘Emergency Calls Only’, it means that there is no signal on the usual network, but a 999 call will ‘roam’ to a working network, to connect the emergency call. Unfortunately, this is a one-way process, so calls cannot be returned, nor will text messages reach the phone. In this situation it can help if the caller repeats the 999 call, say 10 minutes after ending the first call (unless the call-taker has kept the caller connected).
