INCIDENT 15/2025. (same day) 14.23. PEN Y GHENT, NORTH YORKSHIRE

A caller from Poland reported her son and a friend ‘scared and lost’ on Pen y ghent. After some confusion, the members who had been at Malham drove up Horton Scar Lane (a.k.a. the vicarage track) in two team Land Rovers while other team members reported their availability from home or work, in case the need for a search developed. When it was learned that the two were near Hull Pot, one vehicle continued up to confirm that they were safe and well, while the other returned to Clapham via Horton and Settle. Other members were stood down.

What had happened?   It is understood that the ‘mispers’ had halted in low cloud near the top of Pen y ghent but the tracker they were using interpreted the delay as an emergency and called the mother. She phoned the pair, which is when they said they were ‘scared and lost’ on Pen y ghent. The tracker later up-dated to a site near Hull Pot and this information was passed on.
