CRO MEMBERS WIN THE 2023 MONTANE MRT WINTER SPINE CHALLENGER

Team members have been ‘dot-watching’ over the weekend, following the progress of CRO colleagues entered in the Montane MRT Winter Spine Challenger event for members of mountain rescue teams. The event – along the southern part of the Pennine Way from Edale to Hawes – is 108 miles and would take most walkers about a week. Mike Bottomley completed this ultra-marathon in 34 hours and 43 minutes to win the male MRT member category. His partner, Steph Dwyer, completed the CRO ‘double’, winning the female MRT member category in just under 37 hours. There were many more non-MRT runners; Mike was 9th man, overall, and Steph was 2nd woman (by only three and a half minutes!). When Steph finished, there were 43 runners still going and 64 had retired, which illustrates the cold, wet, muddy and trying conditions for competitors.

Congratulations from all who stayed at home, in the warm and thanks to members and friends who provided support.

Mike and Steph run Yorkshire Dales Guides, based at Stainforth. They are raising money for CRO via Just Giving at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/steph-dwyer and https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/steph-dwyer1 .
