Following a particulary protracted rescue of an injured caver from Gingling Hole a meeting was held on 24th November 1934 by a number of senior caving clubs. They agreed to set up a cave rescue organisation based on Settle; rescue wardens were appointed and liaison with the Police and St John's Ambulance established. The CRO became operational early in 1935, the first volunteer cave rescue team in the country, possibly the world.

In 2010 the current members of the Cave Rescue Organisation will celebrate 75 years of voluntary service - keep an eye on our news for more information!
